21st Century Girls – growing up female in a screen-saturated, hyper-competitive world
There has never been a better time to be female. But why, for so many girls, has the feminist promise ‘You can do anything!’ turned into the internal instruction ‘I must do everything!’ Why are 21st century girls still falling prey to gender stereotypes their grandmothers fought to escape? And why are traditional female virtues such as empathy and care in short supply in wealthy western nations? This presentation looks at the way girls’ minds develop from birth to the teenage years and the difficulties they face growing up in the modern world. It suggests ways that parents and schools can encourage female strengths so that 21st century girls – and societies – flourish.
